Welcome

Samantha Masih

Samantha Masih is a university student with a deeply interdisciplinary background spanning marine science, neuroscience, cardiology, microbiology, and mechanical engineering. Her work focuses on understanding complex systems across scales: from cellular and microbial processes to neural networks, marine ecosystems, and engineered systems. Alongside her research, she runs a motorsports media page covering NASCAR and Formula 1 and works in voice acting, combining technical knowledge with clear, engaging communication.

Microbiology & Scientific Communication
Samantha has also contributed to microbiology research and scientific communication through MicrobeWiki, a comprehensive, student-edited online microbiology resource hosted by Kenyon College. MicrobeWiki serves as a collaborative database documenting microorganisms across domains of life, including bacteria, viruses, fungi, protists, and archaea.
She is the first author of the MicrobeWiki page on Polychaos dubium. This article explores Polychaos dubium from the perspectives of genomic and cellular structure, metabolic processes, cell division, ecology and pathogenesis, and current research. The work emphasizes the challenges of studying organisms with exceptionally large genomes and highlights ongoing disputes and assumptions within the field.Mechanical Engineering Publication
In addition to her biological research, Samantha has a strong background in mechanical engineering, most notably through her involvement in the International Submarine Races. She served as Team Coordinator, Public Relations Team Lead, and Dive Team Member for a championship-winning team.
Her contributions included coordinating the production of the team’s submarine logo and banner, co-authoring the Umptysquatch 10 design report for publication and competition use, and presenting the design to judges. She also managed logistics between the competition organizers, engineering faculty, team members, parents, and sponsors, overseeing paperwork submission, funding and donations, travel, and accommodations. The team competed at the Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) Carderock Division, earning Champion of the 17th International Submarine Races along with awards for Best Use of Technology, Absolute Speed, and Fastest Speed by Category.

Research

Marine Science & Field Research
Samantha has conducted scuba-based marine research in New England, USA, and Calabash Caye, Belize, contributing to field studies focused on both temperate and tropical marine ecosystems. Her research experience includes work on sugar kelp (Saccharina latissima) and lacy crust bryozoans in New England waters.
In Belize, her work has included observational and experimental research involving Christmas tree worms (Spirobranchus spp.) and neon gobies. In a laboratory setting, she has conducted investigations into the effects of glucose-based diets on glass anemone (Aiptasia pallida) physiology and behavior. Through this work, she has gained experience in underwater data collection, organism identification, experimental design, and ecological analysis in diverse marine environments.Neuroscience & Computational Research
Samantha also has a strong background in neuroscience research, with an emphasis on connectomics and computational neuroscience. She has completed connectomics data analysis using advanced computational techniques and has extensive experience working with large-scale electron microscopy datasets.
Her work includes tracing axon and dendritic assemblies using WebKnossos, carefully reconstructing neuronal structures and reviewing high-resolution EM data to analyze neural connectivity. In parallel, she has conducted research using the Delayed Non-Match to Sample (DNMS) task to study the neural mechanisms of working memory. This work focuses particularly on the role of the somatosensory cortex, examining short-term neuronal structure changes and long-term functional group interactions and wiring motifs that underlie cognitive processing.Cardiology Research
In the field of cardiology, Samantha has contributed to research focused on electrocardiogram (EKG) analysis aimed at improving the prediction of heart attacks. This work involves identifying patterns in cardiac electrical activity that may serve as early indicators of cardiovascular events, blending data analysis with physiological insight to support preventative healthcare research.
